JASMINE JOBSON IS HEADING FOR THE TOP.
As achild, London-born Jasmine Jobson was separated from her mum and placed into foster care. She channelled her aggression into acting and earned a BAFTA nomination for her drug dealer Jaq in Top Boy. Jobson has also appeared in Ben Whishaw-starring thriller Surge and can soon be seen as the lead in ITVX thriller Platform 7. She spoke to Teasers in early July while filming Andrea Arnold’s new film, Bird.
The final season of Top Boy is upon us. Where do we find Jaq?
Jaq is at a crossroads. Does she want to be a family person and completely step away from that lifestyle? Or is she going to continue and aim to be a Top Boy?
You’re the lead character in drama Platform 7. Tell us about Lisa…
I really loved playing her. Lisa’s a teacher, and she finds herself going through a tough time in her relationship. The series involves a lot of mental abuse, a bit of domestic violence. She’s on a complete [mission of] vengeance.
You had a tough youth. Do you draw on that to play a character like Lisa?
Oh yeah, 100%. I feel like I need to bring something from my own experiences to anything that I’m doing. It gives authenticity. And I’m all about being raw and edgy. Growing up in the care system was definitely tough. So I’ve got a lot to say, a lot to give out.
And you’re also starring in the new Andrea Arnold movie, Bird. That much be so exciting…
Oh my gosh, it’s amazing working with her! We only get the scenes a few days before we’re scheduled to film, so it’s fresh in our minds. If anything, we shoot the rehearsal, when everything’s a little bit all over the place. She loves it. I feel like the sky’s the limit for my career right now. I don’t know where I’ll end up, but it’s going to be a beautiful journey.
TOP BOY S5 IS AVAILABLE ON NETFLIX NOW. PLATFORM 7 IS ON ITVX LATER THIS YEAR. BIRD IS IN PRODUCTION.
