ABIGAIL Radio Silence return with a new spin on a classic screen monster.

After a successful foray into the Scream franchise, directors Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett are returning to their Ready or Not roots with horror comedy Abigail, about a group of criminals hired to keep the 12-year-old ballerina daughter of a crime boss captive for 24 hours.

The catch – because there’s always a catch – is that the innocent-looking child (played by Matilda’s Alisha Weir) is actually a vampire. And not just any vampire, with the film reportedly a reimagining of 1936’s Dracula’s Daughter. She’s not locked in with them, they’re locked in with her…

Melissa Barrera stars as Joey who, despite having a child of her own and taking the time to comfort a pre-transformation Abigail, is in as much danger as everyone else in the house. ‘I’m sorry about what’s going to happen to you,’ says a seemingly sincere Abigail.

‘What are we talking about, like an Anne Rice, or True Blood, you know, Twilight?’ asks Kathryn Newton’s crim. Evidently Radio Silence aren’t jettisoning the meta-smarts of the Scream series. Time will tell if the old reliables – wooden stakes, garlic, daylight – have any effect.

‘What can I say? I like playing with my food,’ teases Abigail, who pirouettes and pliés around the house while stalking her prey. Not only that: she can fly. The pit of bloated corpses in the basement make it clear this isn’t the first massacre.

Expect a pitch-black streak of humour to run through Abigail, with the character shaking off a bullet to the head and doing the waltz with a headless corpse. ‘I fucking hate ballet,’ says Dan Stevens’ bad guy. Can you blame him?
